Sore throat (including tonsillitis)
Who we can treat: ages 5 years and over.
Common symptoms: sore throat, swallowing pain, fever, swollen tonsils (sometimes with pus), tender neck glands.
What we do: assess with recognised criteria (e.g. FeverPAIN). We give self-care advice; and if criteria are met, we may supply an appropriate antibiotic under the NHS PGD, or refer if red-flag symptoms are present.
Eligibility: Pharmacy First age range for sore throat is 5+ years.
Sinusitis
Who we can treat: ages 12 years and over.
Common symptoms: facial pain/pressure, blocked or runny nose (often green/yellow), reduced smell, headache.
What we do: assess duration/severity, provide self-care (pain relief, nasal saline/steroid where suitable); antibiotics are rarely needed but can be supplied under PGD when indicated; otherwise safety-netting or referral.
Eligibility: Pharmacy First age range for sinusitis is 12+ years.
Infected insect bites
Who we can treat: ages 1 year and over.
Common symptoms: increasing redness/swelling, warmth, pain, pus or crusting after a bite or sting.
What we do: advise on antihistamines/soothing care; if signs of infection are present we may supply an antibiotic under PGD (or erythromycin options where appropriate), or refer if cellulitis/other red flags are suspected.
Eligibility: Pharmacy First age range for infected insect bites is 1+ years.
Shingles
Who we can treat: ages 18 years and over.
Common symptoms: burning/tingling pain followed by a stripe-like blistering rash on one side of the body or face.
What we do: assess rash onset and severity; when appropriate and within time window we may supply antiviral treatment under PGD; urgent referral if eye involvement, widespread rash, pregnancy, immunosuppression or severe pain.
Eligibility: Pharmacy First age range for shingles is 18+ years.
Urinary tract infection (UTI)
Who we can treat:women aged 16 to 64 years (non-pregnant).
Common symptoms: burning when peeing, frequency/urgency, lower tummy pain; urine may be cloudy or strong-smelling.
What we do: assess symptoms and risk factors; provide self-care advice and, if appropriate, supply antibiotics under PGD; refer if red flags (fever/flank pain, pregnancy, recurrent UTIs, men, children, frailty, catheter, etc.).
Eligibility: Pharmacy First UTI pathway is for non-pregnant women 16–64 years.
Impetigo
Who we can treat: ages 1 year and over.
Common symptoms: red sores that quickly burst and form a honey-coloured crust; often around the mouth/nose or limbs.
What we do: confirm typical appearance; provide hygiene/self-care advice; may supply the appropriate antibiotic under PGD when indicated; advise on exclusion from nursery/school until treated and crusted over.
